The role of emotional intelligence in professional orientation of school students

This article investigates the role of emotional intelligence in the professional orientation of school students. The purpose of the research is to study the role of emotional intelligence in the professional orientation of school students, emotional intelligence and factors affecting the desire and choice of profession by school students. The study was conducted among students of 8th, 9th and 10th grades in Pavlodar. The study was conducted using D. Lucin’s questionnaire «EmIn» to determine the level of emotional intelligence and the author’s career guidance questionnaire. The results showed that the level of emotional intelligence of schoolchildren correlates with intentions in choosing a profession, as well as with the factors and obstacles affecting this choice. Emotionally intelligent pupils are guided by aspects related to the social significance of the profession, while pupils who demonstrated low levels of emotional intelligence are oriented towards material aspects and external influencing factors. These results emphasize the importance of integrating the development of emotional intelligence into the educational process in order to prepare schoolchildren for an informed choice of profession and successful adaptation in the future working environment. This study has practical significance for educational institutions and teachers and parents.
